Comic Book Review: Red Sonja Volume 1: Queen Of Plagues by Gail Simone

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Red Sonja is being released today. I read this back in January thanks to NetGalley. Here is a review of the comic.

Even if I never truly followed it, I always thought Red Sonja was a great character. Gail Simone has revamped this character in this upcoming series. There are a few things I liked about the story and others that left me feeling blah.

First, the character of Sonja is well done and interesting. She is a barbarian and true to type. She is loud, drunk, violent and vulgar. But, she is also honorable and compassionate (sometimes…).  Simone adds a lot of back story in these issues and we get to see Red Sonja’s story. This is important as it gave the rest of the plot a good solid foundation.

My issue lies with the predictability of the story itself and certain ‘fortuitous’ events that were just a bit more than coincidence (near the end). The big reveal was so prosaic and so obvious that I figured it out the rest of the story line after the first issue.

The art was very well done. It was vibrant, with great colors and darkness. It really followed the emotions and feel of the story.
