Book Review: Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It by Gary Taubes

Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About ItWhy We Get Fat: And What to Do About It by Gary Taubes
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Gary Taubes writes an interesting and easy to understand book. Although he references several scientific studies and a lot of chemistry and biology, he does not write the book in an overly technical manner. It is easy to understand and follow. Taubes is trying to bring awareness to the way we eat, the reason why we get fat (it is not always related to exercise and the what we eat) and the biology behind it all.

Taubes addresses genetic predisposition, current dietary choices, diets and exercise. I personally do not believe in diets because it is not something you can maintain. I believe in changing your unhealthy eating habits to healthy ones. I believe in changing the way you think about food and what you eat. That is my personal philosophy. When I picked up this book, I was expecting a book on the science behind fat storage and weight gain. I was not looking for a diet book. Although Taubes espouses certain ideas, this is not quiet a diet book. It is a book about a certain way of eating and the science behind it.

Taubes sometimes takes a myopic view at research so that it backs up his theory. Research on nutrition, fat storage and diets are ongoing and previously held beliefs are debunked and new ones are put forth as viable theories. What I am trying to say is that things change, often; new findings come out every day and Taubes tackles those that back up his theory.

Taubes promotes a low carb, Atkins diet. There is research to back him and there is research to disprove him. In my opinion, everyone is different, everyone's genetic and cultural makeup is different. Talk to your doctor, see what works and what doesn't. Eat healthy and stay away from overly processed food. Avoid empty calories and if it has more that 6 ingredients and some that you don't know what they are, then it might be a good idea to skip.

This is an interesting read if you are trying to get some background about diets.
