Book Review: Another Little Piece by Kate Karyus Quinn

Another Little PieceAnother Little Piece by Kate Karyus Quinn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A girl stumbles through the woods covered in blood and screaming. Then she disappears. That same girl appears miles from home a year later not knowing who she was or how she got there. They tell her she is Annaliese. But, she knows this cannot be right. She may look like Annaliese, her DNA may say she is Annaliese but she does not feel that she is Annaliese. She does not really believe she is entirely human. There is something wrong with her and she slowly starts to figure it out, even though she doesn't really want to. And that is as much as I will say about the plot. More than that and it could give it away.

Throughout the book, this girl (we won't call her Annaliese) starts to have nightmares, memories and a hunger. The pieces start falling into place. The dark truth is slowly revealed and wowza...this was intense. I absolutely loved this book. Take the suspense from Stephen King, the Gothic and macabre from Edgar Allan Poe, mix them up and you get this. This...something of a book. This confusing hauntingly written book with excellent prose, amazing descriptions (page 217 made me cringe), and extremely broken characters. The characters have so many flaws, they are so broken and make so many mistakes that they are barely likable. But, oh so compellingly written that you can't help but cheer for them.

The book is uncompromising in its exploration of taboo subjects, cringe worthy scenes and a few icky moments. This book grabbed me from beginning to end. It was intense, not in action, but in the darkness that permeated it. If you like Edgar Allan Poe, this book is a must read. It is well written, enjoyable, confusing, frustrating, and so very good.
