Today we are featuring a guest post by Jennifer Turner, author of My Name is JakeMy Name is Jake is an illustrated rhyming book for children. Enjoy!

The Main Character in My Name Is Jake

By Jennifer Turner

The main character in my book, My Name is Jake, is a little boy named Jake. He is based on my son, both in appearance and personality. I gave my artist a number of pictures of him from different angles, participating in various activities. My son is always in motion, and I wanted Jake to be as well. Coincidentally, he likes to do a lot of things that rhyme with his name!

Each page leads the reader through an activity that rhymes with Jake.  He likes to eat pancakes.  In the winter, he catches snowflakes. When the leaves fall off the trees in fall, it’s fun to rake them. Jake has learned when he drops something it may break, particularly if it is dropped on the hard floor in the kitchen. The kitchen floor in our house is very unforgiving.  My son is well aware of that and currently only uses plastic cups and plates in the kitchen.

At times, I think there is the misconception that writing a children’s book is easy because your audience is children. I find it challenging because you need to use a minimal amount of well-chosen words to effectively communicate your story, in a way that children will understand. A lot of time is spent editing and rewriting what is already there. A book of synonyms is frequently used because I’m constantly trying to figure out how to say the same thing a different way.

While writing My Name is Jake I kept a picture of my son and daughter by my computer to constantly remind myself I was writing for children. I wanted to continually keep in my mind to keep things simple and playful while capturing my son’s personality in Jake.
Jennifer Turner was inspired to start writing children’s books after developing a love for children’s literature while reading to her young children. She wrote My Name is Jake in her head while taking her infant daughter on long walks in her stroller. Jennifer received her BA in Art History from the University of Colorado/Boulder and lives in Colorado with her husband and two children. She loves reading to her children and watching them grow, yoga and bike rides with her family. For more information visit the Peaks Press website, or to buy a copy go to My Name is Jake.

Please tell Charlene I am happy to provide a free copy of My Name is Jake.  I can either send it to her or mail it directly to whomever she wants.
